West Wind Farm

Marcus was bored.  So we decided to take a 20 minute drive to the recently opened Opau wind farm in Makara, through Karori. The last part of the road leading to the car park was gravel, and the wind farm was ... windy. The folks who drove in front of us , in a Porsche convertible, didn't stay long.  There is a recycled hollowed-out Post Office building installed on-site being used as a viewing platform.

We checked out the view from the PO building looking towards Wellington city.

There is access to a wind turbine towards Makara beach.

So Marcus and I made our way towards the beach.  It was a blustery walk and even the wind speed gauge had to be placed in a most sheltered spot on the track.

We went up a little knoll for a look at the south island, but it was difficult to stay up-right there.

Up close to the beach-side turbine.

Marcus inspecting the walking track information.  There are a couple of walking tracks.  The Makara beach one is a 3 hour walk and the inland Opau track is 2 hours.  There are some mountain biking tracks as well, but we didn't check them out.

Final view of Makara beach.  And my first blog.
